Following a few years of growth, the Chapter built a house at 316 Lynn Avenue in 1922 where it still acts as the chapter facility today following a renovation in 2006. The Iowa Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi was founded in 1913. Today, Phi Psi is composed of around 100 chapters nationwide with over 90,000 living alumni! Local Establishment Phi Kappa Psi has been cultivating young men to use their higher education as a means to serve others ever since. Letterman and Moore wanted to create an organization to care for those affected by the disease, and thus Phi Kappa Psi was founded under the premise of “the great joy of serving others” on February 19th, 1852. ![]() William Henry Letterman and Charles Page Thomas Moore founded Phi Kappa Psi in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, at Jefferson College in the midst of a typhoid fever outbreak. The four pillars, which are represented prominently outside the Iowa Beta Chapter House, continue to be a guide for its operation today. The first unit in Germany, the Roman Herzog Inn, was chartered in 2006 at the Bucerius Law School, in Hamburg.Īfter 140 years of operation as a professional fraternity, the Fraternity was re-cast as an honor society in 2012. The first unit in Mexico, the Velasco Inn, was chartered in 1973 at the Escuela Libre de Derecho, in Mexico City. The first international unit of the fraternity was the Weldon Inn, chartered in 1925 at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. ![]() Thus, according to Baird's 20th, the fraternity sprang back to full strength "almost before the fighting had ceased." Even during WWII, when law school admissions enrollments virtually ceased, all the Fraternity's inns remained active on a restricted basis. Phi Delta Phi Inns have occasionally leased or owned residential buildings or secured meeting spaces, often adjacent to law libraries. Howard instead turned his efforts toward founding a fraternity devoted purely to students of the legal profession. His initial intent was to found a chapter of FIJI at the University, but he did not follow through with the plan because of the large number of chapters already in place on the campus. Howard was a graduate of Monmouth College and member of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI). Phi Delta Phi Fraternity was founded in the law department of the University of Michigan by John M.
